Breath~Body~Mind® Workshop. Staten Island

Jan 28-29, 2012

For firemen and other 9/11 First Responders and their families. Sponsored by Serving Those Who Serve: www.stws.org

Richard P. Brown, MD, Associate Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, teaches advanced breath techniques and meditation to help stressed and traumatized people improve energy, sleep quality, stress resilience, and peace of mind as well as detoxify their bodies and regain harmony in their lives. His work is a unique fusion of ancient and modern mind-body techniques derived from Qigong, yoga, Christian monks, Coherent Breathing, Open Focus meditation, and martial arts. Dr. Brown feels that, “To be able to transform so many peoples’ lives in a short course has been a special blessing for me. I especially enjoy helping 9/11 responders and military veterans recover their lives.”

Research has shown that extraordinary breathing techniques, like those taught by Dr. Brown, effectively relieve stress and improve energy, mental focus, heart and lung function and endurance. The benefits have been demonstrated in health care practitioners, 9/11 First Responders and Ground Zero workers, individuals with psychiatric and medical conditions, and victims of terrorism, war and natural disasters. Many people who have worked with Dr. Brown say they have been transformed, and that they never would have imagined that something so simple would have been so powerful and helpful.

Serving Those Who Serve (STWS) is a non-profit group providing services to people suffering from physical and emotional illnesses related to the NY September 11th WTC Attacks. The 9/11 Community includes First Responders, Ground Zero workers and volunteers, WTC workers and their families, and area residents. STWS sponsors our Breath~Body~Mind© program for relief of physical and emotional distress as well as for personal development. Workshops are open to the public. In addition to positive feedback from participants, preliminary research data indicate significant improvements in anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress symptoms (Martin Katzman and Monica Vermani, in process).

Research Faculty Opening Behavioral Scientist in Integrative Medicine

The Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health (VCIH) promotes academic development of integrative medicine (IM) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). VCIH has a robust clinical integrative medicine service at VUMC and provides education regarding integrative medicine to the academic and local community. Additionally, VCIH is dedicated to advancing integrative medicine research through support and career development of research scientists focusing on IM research.

To date, the VCIH has recruited one faculty member, Gurjeet Birdee MD MPH, to advance research in integrative medicine. In addition, the Center has supported several ongoing research projects related to: (1) Conventional vs. Mindfulness Intervention in Parents of Children with Disabilities ($1 million Challenge Grant), (2) Intra-dialysis Yoga for Patients with End Stage Renal Disease, (3) Health Coaching Intervention Study, (4) Yoga Intervention for Cancer Survivors. Recruitment of a new faculty member with training in behavioral science or neuroscience would help to increase the rigor of current and future research related to Integrative Medicine. Specifically, a PhD trained scientist could help ensure that research in this field is rigorously designed, has accurate measurement, and intervention fidelity. A PhD trained scientist could also help with evaluative methods including qualitative methods, mixed-methods, modeling approaches and psychometric analyses.

A new PhD faculty member could receive mentorship and collaborate with numerous other faculty within the Institute, including faculty from the Institute for Medicine and Public Health, the Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research, Departments of Psychiatry, Psychology (Arts and Sciences), Human Organization and Development (Peabody), the Institute for Imaging Science, the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center, the Vanderbilt Eskind Diabetes Center, and other programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD, preferentially in health psychology, behavior science, or neuroscience
  • Emphasis on the study of integrative medicine modalities including acupuncture, massage, health coaching, dietary supplements, and mind-body therapies such as yoga, tai chi, or meditation.
  • Expertise in behavioral measurement, qualitative research methods, and/or neuroimaging.
  • Strong skills in research methodology, experimental design, and statistical analyses.
  • Successful record of funding through the National Institutes of Health is desirable but not required.

Job Description: VCIH is seeking applications for a full time tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to pursue research on the role and effect of integrative medicine (IM) on human behavior, psychology, and neurobiology. This faculty member will have an opportunity to collaborate with other research faculty in Vanderbilt’s diverse and rich academic community including the Institute for Medicine and Public Health, the Vanderbilt Center for Health Service Research, Psychological Sciences, Psychiatric Neuroimaging, Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and other campus centers. Rank, tenure status, and compensation will be based on qualifications.

Inquiries please contact: Matthew Kennon, Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research, Matthew.Kennon@vanderbilt.edu
